Indian Local Places on Google Maps

PlayCez is a great Google Maps based local recommendation engine for India.

PlayCez users can find the best places to eat, shop and hang out in the largest Indian cities. The user interface is very simple to use. Users just need to choose a city and whether they want to eat, shop or hangout. The results are then displayed on a Google Map and displayed alongside the map.

If users select an individual venue they can then read comments about the venue by other users, invite their friends to meet at the venue (via Connect with Facebook) and get directions to the venue.

Currently PlayCez is available for the major cities in India, but has plans to expand to further geographies soon.

Local Foods & Dishes on Google Maps

One of the great joys of travelling is discovering (and tasting) the local and regional foods and dishes of the places you visit.

If you ever get the chance to travel around England then I recommend you consult The Food Map of England and the UK Food Tourism website.

The Food Map of England is a Google Map that shows the local and regional specialities of food throughout England. For example, if you visit Cheshire, The Food Map of England shows you that Cheshire Onion Pie, Cheshire Lamb Crumble, Cheshire Cheese and Cheshire Pork Pie are all local delicacies that you might want to try.

After finding the local dishes on offer with The Food Map of England you can then consult the UK Food Tourism website to discover local restaurants, and local food markets and festivals. The UK Food Tourism website contains a number of regional Google Maps that allow you to discover locally recommended food centres throughout the UK.

London Coffee on Google Maps

London Coffee Map

I've started playing with the Places Library in the Google Maps API.

One feature of the library is that it lets you load venues that match a particular name. I've used this feature to show the locations of cafes belonging to the bigger coffee chains in London.

The London Coffee Map lets you find cafes run by the Monmouth Coffee Company, Starbucks, Costa Coffee and Caffe Nero. If you click on a marker you can view the cafe's Google Places rating and its telephone number.

Google Maps Mackerel Mission

Fish Fight MackMap

In the UK broadcaster Channel 4 are backing a campaign to persuade Britain's fish & chip shops to put mackerel on the menu alongside the traditional cod & chips.

The UK's traditional love of cod means that cod is being over-fished whilst mackerel is fished in a controlled and sustainable way. Hence the campaign to get the British to try a little mackerel & chips.

The broadcaster is using Google Maps to show the fish & chip shops in the UK that have agreed to serve mackerel and those who are still not serving the sustainable fish. Channel 4 is crowd-sourcing its campaign so, if your local fish & chip shop is not included, you can add it to the map.

Find a McRib with Google Maps

McRib Locator

It isn't often that a Google Maps application makes it to the top of Google Trends but that is what has happened to Alan Klein's three year old McRib Locator.

The map allows users to submit sightings of the McRib and to find where the sandwiches are currently being served. It seems that the reason the map is suddenly trending is because the McRib will be available at all McDonald's outlets from November 2nd until mid-December.

If you can't wait until November the last McRib sighting was in Reno and there have been 207 sightings in the last week.

Welcome to Plymouth with Google Maps

Plymouth 3D

Google Maps is such a great tool for promoting towns and cities I'm surprised there aren't more sites like 3D Plymouth. 3D Plymouth is a Google Maps based guide to the picturesque town of Plymouth, Michigan.

Plymouth 3D uses the Google Earth browser plug-in to allow you to explore the town in glorious 3D. If you don't like the 3D option you can select Google Maps to view all the information with a normal map view.

And what a lot of information there is.

Plymouth 3D can show you the location of any store in the town. If you need a hair cut, select 'Barber' and you can view the location of all the town's barbers, or maybe you fancy an icecream, if so just select 'Candies & Ice Cream'. There is in fact over 40 categories of store to choose from.

If you have finished your shopping then Plymouth 3D can even help you find some entertainment. The 'Locate Events' section can show you the location of upcoming entertainment and sporting events in the town.

There are also options to view the weather, local traffic, road closures, schools, Street View and local property for sale. There are so many options with this map that I'm sure I've even missed a few.
