New York Evacuation Zones

The New York Times' New York City Hurricane Evacuation Zones Google Map shows the three evacuation zones in New York.



The zones are based on the strength of the hurricane making landfall. New York is preparing for the threat of storm surges with the closure of the entire public transportation system.





Climate Central has created a Google Map showing the areas in lower Manhattan, New Jersey and Brooklyn that are most at risk of storm surges from Hurricane Irene.

Google Crisis Response - Hurricane Irene

Google Crisis Response has put together a Google Map for the 2011 Hurricane Season. The map currently shows the projected route of Hurricane Irene with the option of viewing a number of other layers on the map.



As well as viewing the forecast track of Hurricane Irene the map includes:

• a cloud imagery layer from the Navy Research Lab
• a layer showing coastal areas placed under tropical cyclone watches or warnings
• evacuation routes from FEMA
• a surge storm probability layer
• real-time Stream Gage Data from USGS

New York Evacuation Zones on Google Maps

The New York Times' Hurricane Irene Tracking Map is probably the only map of Hurricane Irene that you will need.



This Google Map shows the projected path of the hurricane with forecasted wind speeds along the path. It is also possible to overlay the latest satellite pictures of the hurricane on top of the map.





WYNC are also using Google Maps, in their case to display New York City Evacuation Zones.



The map shows three zones in the city:

• Zone A - with the highest risk of flooding from ANY hurricane near NYC.
• Zone B - potential flooding from a Category 2+ hurricanes.
• Zone C - potential flooding from a Category 3-4 hurricane hitting just south of NYC.

The map includes links to the latest official information and to WYNC's own Google Map of Hurricane Irene's projected path.

Storm Surge Simulation with Google Maps

Florida International University has used Google Maps to create a Storm Surge Simulator for Miami-Dade County in Florida.



Storm surge is the greatest threat to life and property from a hurricane. It occurs when water from the ocean is pushed toward the shore by the force of the winds swirling around a hurricane.



This simulator allows residents of Miami-Dade County to enter an address and visualize the potential risk of a hurricane based on the severity of a storm.

Visit Texas with the Help of Google Maps

TravelTex, Texas Tourism's official Web site, is a great guide to things to see and do in the state. The site also includes a handy Google Maps based trip planner.



TravelTex features over 400 cities and thousands of activities to do for visitors to Texas. As users browse the site they can add the viewed attractions and events to their own trip planner and create a personal itinerary. Users can add events, locations, day trips and even driving tours and specify the day they wish to visit each location.



Each item added to the itinerary is also added to the user's personal trip planner Google Map. The map then provides a handy guide to all the bookmarked locations and events.

The Best Places to Live on Google Maps

CNN Money are advising you to move to Louisville, Colorado.



CNN Money's Best Places to Live 2011 Google Map shows the 100 best places to live in the USA. The list was generated by looking at a number of quality of life assessments, including job opportunities, schools, safe streets, economic strength, nice weather and things to do.



The map allows you to look at the top 10 or the top 100 places to live and allows you to zoom to any state via a drop-down menu. If you click through on any of the selected towns you can then read why CNN Money has placed it on the list.

Tracking Hurricane Irene with Google Maps

iMap Weather's Google Map allows you to view the projected path and strength of Hurricane Irene and overlay other weather data, such as rainfall and radar imagery.





Storm Advisory use Google Maps to show the track and projected track of hurricanes. The map currently shows Hurricane Irene as an H2 category storm. StormAdvisory also features a news ticker of the latest hurricane news.





IbisEye is also tracking Hurricane Irene with the help of Google Maps. The map includes constantly updated statistics on the hurricane. At the time of writing IbisEye says that the maximum recorded wind from Irene, so far, is 109 mph.





WunderMap's Google Map of Hurricane Irene also allows you to overlay the latest satellite imagery of cloud cover.

Everyone's Moving South in Boulder

The 2010 U.S. census must now hold the record as the most mapped census of all time. We've been posting maps about the census all year on Google Maps Mania (check the census tab) - and they still keep on coming.



Boulder County Community Foundation has used Fusion Tables to map population changes in Boulder between the 2000 and 2010 censuses. The map seem to show a distinct pattern of a dwindling population in the north of the city and a growing population in the south.



The map also shows vehicle registration data in different parts of the city and allows you to view the locations of Boulder schools.

Haarlem & Harlem on Google Maps

Haerlem.nu is a website dedicated to recording and presenting the history of Haarlem in the Netherlands. Part of the project includes a Google Map that features historical landmarks, photographs and historical notes about locations in the city.



If you sign-up as a 'mosquito' (as the natives of Haarlem call themselves) you can add your own memories, history or photos to the map. With Haerlem.nu you can even create your own map of Haarlem's history.

Digital Harlem is a Google Maps based portal to explore the history of New York City's Harlem neighborhood. The site uses Google Maps to present information about Harlem drawn from legal records, newspapers and other archival and published sources.



The map includes three buttons which allow you to view historical records from 1920, 1925 and 1930. The panel on the left allows you to search for events, people or places, and generate interactive web maps based on the search results.



Multiple layers of results can be displayed on the same map, and each can be toggled on and off. A series of ready-made 'feature' maps can be accessed from the panel on the right.

Red Sox vs the Yankees on Google Maps

Tim Wallace used to face a huge problem every summer. When he was driving through Maine, New Hampshire or Vermont in the summer he knew a Red Sox game must be on a radio station nearby. His problem was trying to find which station was commentating on the game.



Thanks to the Google Maps API Tim has now solved this problem. His Google Map shows in red the areas where Red Sox games are available on the radio. What's more you can click on any of the shaded areas and find out the name of the radio station and what frequency it broadcasts on.



Acutely aware of the endless suffering of less fortunate Yankees fans Tim has kindly added their radio coverage to the map as well.

Hipmunk - Your Hotel & Hotspot Finder

Hipmunk, the flight planning and booking tool, has added a new hotel search function that includes an interesting hotspot facility.



Hipmunk allows users to search for hotels by location and date. The results of each search are shown on a Google Map, with green markers showing the cheapest rates and red the most expensive. It is also possible to sort the results by price, reviews and distance.



Hipmunk also allows users to overlay a number of heatmaps over the results. The heatmaps help the user to see which areas of their destination have high and low concentrations of restaurants, museums, bars etc.



The heatmaps are a useful tool, especially for users booking hotels in unfamiliar locations. In many ways the function improves on Google Hotel Finder's tourist spotlight feature.

Easy Riding on Google Maps

Motorcycle Roads



Motorcycle Roads is a community driven guide to great motorcycle rides in America. Each of the great motorbike rides is accompanied by a Google Map of the ride's route.



Each mapped route includes details about the ride's length, road quality and roadside amenities. The scenery, road quality and amenities are each rated by the route's submitter and include written details.



Sunday Morning Rides



Sunday Morning Rides has used Google Maps to map over 1,500 great motorbike rides throughout the USA.



You can search for rides by state and view each ride on its own map. Each route comes with an interactive elevation chart, which, if you mouseover, shows the Street View for that location.



Motorcycle Network

Motorcycle Network is a directory of everything to do with motorcycles in Australia. The site uses Google Maps to show all the parking spots in the major cities and also show all the motorcycle and scooter dealers, mechanics and gear shops, as well as all the training facilities, tours, insurance and hire places around Australia.



Mr Zip66's Easy Rider Map

Denis Hopper's Easy Rider is to many the seminal counter-culture movie of the 1960's. Some of us may never get the chance to ride a bike across the States but thanks to Mr Zip we can follow the route on Google Maps.



Mr Zip has pieced together the locations used in the film and managed to put together a rough approximation of the route. The map itself is simple enough, showing the route in blue, with a few map markers showing the locations of the main scenes in the movie.

The New Yorker on Google Maps

The New Yorker has released a New York events listings phone application for both the Android and the iPhone.



The Goings on About Town app provides listings for music, movies, art, theatre and other events in New York. The app includes a 'My Location' feature that uses Google Maps to show you what events are occurring around your current location.



The app also allows users to search listings by date, to access restaurant reviews from the New Yorker and includes recommended places from New York artists and writers.

Remembering 9/11 with Google Maps

Nearly everybody can remember where they were when they heard that flight 11 had flown into the World Trade Center’s North Tower and that the South Tower had collapsed.



The National Geographic Channel has created this Google Map to commemorate the collective presence and kindness of strangers that got many people through the unimaginable horrors they witnessed that day.



On the 10th anniversary of 9/11 the National Geographic Channel is inviting everyone to rebuild this collective history of 9/11 by sharing their personal stories on an interactive Google Map.



The Remembering 9/11 Facebook app allows users to post brief accounts of their 9/11 experiences and mark their stories on the interactive map. Users are also able to explore all posted anecdotes by location and filter stories to see their friends’ stories and share comments.



The app is available worldwide in nine languages.

Boston's Buses Live on Google Maps

With TransitSpy you can follow Boston's MBTA buses live on Google Maps.

Using the sidebar you can select any combination of MBTA bus routes and view in real-time the position of the buses on those routes. As well as the live buses all the stops on a route are displayed on the map. If you click on a bus-stop's map marker you can see how long you will have to wait until the next bus arrives.

America's Hate Groups on Google Maps

The Southern Poverty Law Center has created a Google Map of active hate groups in the United States.

The map displays the location of 1,002 hate groups throughout the U.S.. The list was compiled using hate group publications and websites, citizen and law enforcement reports, field sources and news reports.

Using the map it is possible to select a U.S. state and view all the state's recorded hate groups on the map. A list of the hate groups is also displayed under the map. The hate groups are categorized by city and by type.

A Google Map of School Immunizations

The Chicago Tribune has analysed state data for clusters of children without the required vaccinations at public and private schools in Illinois. These clusters seriously raise the chances of school-based outbreaks of serious preventable diseases like measles and whooping cough.

To accompany the analysis the Chicago Tribune has created a Google Map that lets you search for individual schools and view the percentage of students at the school with the recommended immunizations.

The map also shows hotspots where schools don't meet these recommendations.

New York Videos on Google Maps

MyBlockNYC is a Google Maps based application that allows users to upload and explore videos documenting the life and culture of New York City.

The site already boasts nearly 1000 videos and videos representing 734 New York City blocks. The blocks that have videos are displayed on the map with yellow roads. If you click on a yellow line you can watch the video directly from the map.

As well as exploring the videos by location you can filter the results by category, by time of day and season, and by the age and sex of the film-maker.

New York Apartments on Google Maps

Renthop is a great rental apartment finder for New York. Using the Google Maps view it is possible to search for properties by the usual location, number of bedrooms and price filters.

Boston's Elastic Boundaries on Google Maps

Like many big cities Boston has very fluid neighborhood boundaries. Two people living next door to each other can often have very different ideas of which district they live in.

To try and clear up some of the confusion around Boston's boundaries Boston.com has created a Google Map that shows the different boundaries used by the Boston Redevelopment Authority, by the police, by the city and those determined by zip code.

Using the map you can drag the map pin around to view the different district boundaries at different locations.
