Dutch Crime on Google Maps

The Dutch city of Utrecht has its very own crime map.

Stopdecriminaliteit.nl. uses Google Maps to show the latest incidents of crime in the Dutch town and surrounding areas. It is possible to search the map by postcode or by type of crime. For reasons of privacy, however, crimes are never plotted to the exact address on the map.

As well as plotting crimes in Utrecht the site also gives general advice on measures that you can be taken to make your house more secure against burglary.

5000 Crimes in San Francisco

This Google Map displays 5000 crimes in San Francisco almost instantly on a Google Map. The map was created with the Google Maps API and the Dotter.js, a javascript class that generates data URIs.

The crimes displayed were committed in San Francisco between the 25th April and 25th May 2011. What is really impressive about the map is how quickly the 5000 data points load on the map.

Reporting Bribes with Google Maps

Bribespot

The next time the police or a government official tries to coerce you into handing over your hard earn cash for favours Bribespot wants to know about it.

Bribespot is a crowdsourced Google Map that allows individuals to report when someone has asked them for a bribe. Using the map you can report locations where bribes are requested/paid, indicate the size of the bribe and the area of government / police that tried to shake you down.

Bribespot is available as an iPhone and Android app and from your desktop. The desktop version lets you report bribes and view a Google Map of all the user submitted locations. You can also view a check-in stream of all the latest reports to Bribespot.

New York Dope Arrests on Google Maps

Sharing NYC Police Precinct Data

WNYC has used Google Maps to show the 19 New York City precincts with the highest arrest rates for the lowest level marijuana possession misdemeanours. The map was created to accompany two WYNC stories (1 & 2).

The two WYNC articles examine the large number of police stop and frisk arrests in New York for marijuana possession. Almost 90 percent of the people arrested for marijuana in the city are black or Latino.

The map shows the 19 precincts with the highest arrest rates. The precincts are shaded on the map to display the majority race or ethnicity, where one exists in the precinct. If you click on precinct you can view details on the number of stop and frisk stops, the number of arrests and a breakdown of the precinct population.

All the data for the map is available in the form of three fusion tables.

Play Dangerous or Not With Street View

Who Wants to Not Get Stabbed?

This game by Tom Scott uses Google Street View and data from the Police.uk API. In the game you are presented with the Street View of two different locations in the UK. The object is the game is to guess which of the locations has the lowest rate of anti-social behaviour.

Despite the rather gruesome sounding name this game of Dangerous or Not is actually quite an interesting test of your geographical prejudices. Underneath each Street View is a brief description of the location. You therefore have to guess which area is more 'anti-social' based on your geographical prejudices.

The results can be quite surprising and challenge your prejudices about different locations. At the end of a game you are given an assessment of your score. Apparently I am "about as street-smart as someone in a 1980s public information film."

SpotCrime Adds UK Crime Data

SpotCrime

UK crime data has been added to SpotCrime and MyLocalCrime. The UK recently launched a national crime map for England and Wales called Police.uk. This data is now available in SpotCrime and MyLocalCrime.

Using both services it is possible to search for a UK address and view the latest crime data for the location on a Google Map. The data for a searched location is also displayed beneath the map. It is possible to click on a map marker to click through to read further details about each recorded crime.

Comparing Crime with Google Maps

The Guardian have teamed up with SpatialKey to create a great Google Maps application that allows you to compare crime statistics in two different UK locations or compare two different crime statistics at the same location.

The application places two Google Maps side by side. You can enter two different locations and compare December's crime statistics as a heat map at each location. You can select from a number of crime categories and can even compare the statistics for two different categories at the same location.

The crime is displayed in the form of a heat map. If you roll-over either map the total crime at the specific location is shown in figures. If you click on the map an information window opens displaying the designated location from which the crime statistics were collected.

UK Launches National Crime Map

Police.uk

A new national crime map has been released by the government in the UK. UK citizens, in England and Wales, can now search this Google Maps application to find what crimes have been committed in their neighbourhoods.

Previously UK police forces have been very reluctant to release the location of crimes beyond local ward level. The new map shows crime mapped to "an anonymous point on or near the road where they occurred." Individual addresses are not pinpointed on the map.

To search for crime in an area users can enter a postcode or an address. The map will then display the crimes committed in a radius of the submitted location. The maps include a pretty neat marker clustering system and the number of crimes are also broken down by category.

Fusion Table Queries on Google Maps

London Teenage Murders 2005-2010

I'm a big fan of Google Fusion Tables and this Google Map of London's teenage murders over the last six years is a great example of the powerful query functions available with Fusion Tables.

The map allows you to view the locations of all of London's teenage murders from 2005 to 2010. You can query the map by year and also by age, gender and cause of death. After each query the Google Map uploads the relevant data from the Fusion Table dynamically.

The application also uses Fusion Tables to list the names of the victims beneath the map. A drop-down menu lets you select from any of the six years. The victims details for the selected year are then displayed below the map.

Robbery Maps

Robberymaps is a Spanish language crowd-sourced Google Map showing the locations of robberies around the world.

The site was launched in Barcelona and most of the user submitted reports of robberies are still submitted from the city. At the moment then the map is most useful for people who live in Barcelona or are planning to visit. The map is full of useful user submitted information about areas of the city that you should be particularly careful.

Barcelona is fairly well known for its gangs of pickpockets. This map could therefore be very useful if you want to find out the latest areas that the gangs have been seen operating in.

Do You Know the One-Legged Bomber?

The One-Legged Copenhagen Bomber

The Danish police are trying to identify a man who was arrested following a blast in a Copenhagen Hotel. The man was arrested fleeing the hotel after the blast. Explosives and a loaded gun were also found in his room.

The man is 25-35 years old and has only one leg. However the police have been unable to establish his identity. Danish newspaper Ekstra Bladet are using Twitter and Facebook to see if social media can help establish his identity.

Soren of microformats.dk has decided to help the newspaper by producing two Google Maps with the map tiles replaced with a profile and portrait photograph of the arrested suspect.

Warning: these two maps aren't pretty.

Pittsburgh Homicides on Google Maps

What's Killing Pittsburghers?

If this Google Maps from the Pittsburgh Tribune Review is anything to go by the answer to the question 'what is killing Pittsburghers?' is 'guns and drug overdoses'.

The map shows deaths handled by the Allegheny County Medical Examiners Office during the last four years. It is possible to filter the results by 'homicide' or 'drug overdose'. It is also possible to filter the results by year.

In the map sidebar there are options to centre the map on specific neighborhoods and to refine the results further by race, age, gender or cause of death. The 'What is killing Pittsburghers?' map also uses the Google Maps Styled Map feature to present a suitably appropriate black and white base map.

UK website the Missing List has created a Google Map to display information about missing people in the UK. The data for the map comes from appeals made by the police for information about missing people.

If you click on a map marker you can view photos and a brief description. You can click through to read further details. You can also refine the results shown on the map by month and year.

The Missing List has also created a Police Appeals Google Map. The map displays appeals made by the police concerning recent criminal offences in the UK. Again you can refine the map by month and year. You can also refine the results by type of crime.

The Murder Map project aims to create the first ever comprehensive picture of homicide in London. On its completion, the developers say it will contain details of every murder and manslaughter committed in London from the crimes of Jack the Ripper to the present day.

At the moment the map seems to show murders in the UK capital just for 2010. You can filter the results shown on the Google Map of homicides by murder weapon.

All Murders Washington DC 2005-2009

Burgersub.org have a number of Google Maps that visualise murders in Washington DC and Baltimore. The maps include this Google Map of all Washington DC murders from 2005 and 2009.

Baltimore Sun - Baltimore Homicides

The Baltimore Sun has a Homicides Map that allows you to view all murders in Baltimore since 2007. The map allows you to refine the results by date, location, gender, race and cause of death.

Bike Thefts on Google Maps

Oak Park and River Forest Bike Theft Map

I cycle almost daily. My experience is that I have a bike stolen on average every other year. So over the years I've worked out that in the long run it is probably best to buy only the cheapest bikes in London.

I couldn't agree more then with the The Wednesday Journal of Oak Park and River Forest when they say that the "best way to avoid thefts is to be smart and informed". To help residents in this suburb of Chicago keep informed The Wednesday Journal are creating a Google Map each week to show the locations of bikes stolen

The map shows whether bikes were secured or unsecured when stolen and also shows arrests made related to the theft of a bike. Looking at the map there seems to be a cluster of thefts around South Boulevard. My guess is these are bikes mainly left at subway stations on the Green Line.

MyLocalCrime is a Google Maps mashup showing the locations of crime around the world. The site maps crime collected by SpotCrime.

MyLocalCrime is a crime data aggregator. The site collects the crime incidents and plots them on a map. Users can also sign up to receive e-mail alerts for their location. If you enter your location in the search box the site will display the local crime tagged to where the crimes were committed.

The crimes are indicated by categorised map markers. The categories of crime mapped are Arson, Assault, Burglary, Robbery, Shooting, Theft and Vandalism. If you click on a map marker you can read more about each individual crime.

Comox Valley Crime on Google Maps

This Google Maps mashup displays the locations of crimes in the Comox Valley in Canada.

The map features a useful timeline that lets you refine the crimes shown by any month going back to September of last year. The map also lets you refine the crimes shown on the map by type of crime and by district. It is even possible to select individual streets to view all the crimes committed there in the last year.

The map uses categorised map markers to show the type of crime committed. The results of a crime search are all displayed in list form beneath the map, as well as being displayed on the map.

LA & Chicago Homicides on Google Maps

LA Times Homicide Report

The Los Angeles Times is using Google Maps to show the locations of all homicides in Los Angeles county. The map allows the user to view the locations of all homicides going back to 2007.

The map uses circular map markers to show homicides and clusters of homicides. The bigger the circle then the more murders took place at that location. This allows the user of the map to tell at a glance where the most murders have taken place. For example, this year the Compton / Lynwood area stands out as being the most dangerous place to live.

If you roll over the circular map markers a number appears telling you the total number of homicides in that area. The names of the victims are also highlighted in the map sidebar. It is possible to query the map by address, by name or by neighbourhood.

Redeye Chicago Homicides Map

The Chicago Redeye has 'repurposed' the code of the LA Times Homicide Map to create a homicide map for Chicago. The map shows the locations of homicides in the city dating back to 2008.

The map works exactly the same as the LA Times map, which means that users can query the map by location, name or by neighbourhood.

Google Maps of Cycling Casualties

CityBeast Casualty Maps of Great Britain

CityBeast have created a number of Google Maps to show the location of cyclist fatalities and accidents that led to serious injuries in Great Britain. The maps show fatalities and accidents in the nine years from 2000 to 2008.

Fatalities are indicated on the maps with red map markers and serious injuries are shown in blue. The markers reveal the date and time of the accident, the gender of the cyclist, the manoeuvre being carried out by the cyclist at the time of the accident and the other vehicle involved in the collision.

The maps are based on an analysis by Ted Reilly of data from the UK Department for Transport.

The First Colombian Google Maps Mashup

Transporteenlinea.net is your one stop Google Map for Colombia. The map includes transport lines, the latest crimes committed and local points of interest. In fact the map has so much data that it comes with three different addresses to provide quick links to the different sections; Transporteenlinea.net, Ciudadenlinea.net and Seguridadenlinea.net.

If you select the 'Sitios' option at the top of the map you can find hundreds of points of interest in many different categories, including culture, restaurants and sport.

If you select 'Transporte' you can view the bus and metro routes in Medellín. The map sidebar contains quick links to differnet regions in the city. If you click on the 'consult local routes' option and then click on the map you can view all the nearest bus lines to your selected location. Alternatively you can select a bus or metro line form the map sidebar.
