The Future of the City on Google Maps

Festival of Ideas Map

New York's Festival of Ideas for the New City is a five day festival exploring ideas about the future of the city. The festival includes a conference, a StreetFest and over eighty independent projects and public events.

The Festival of Ideas Google Map shows you where and when festival events are taking place. Events are color-coded on the map to show whether they are part of the conference, StreetFest or projects.

If you click on a map marker details of the selected event appear in a map window and the side panel scrolls to highlight the event.

The Rain in Spain Falls on Google Maps

El Tiempo

Spanish newspaper El Mundo has created a very nice Google Map to show the weather in Spain.

The map's default view displays today's weather, however you can use the numbered icons at the top of the map to view the forecast for the next three days. If you click on any of the weather icons displayed on the map you can view today's weather at that location and view a quick three day forecast.

The map also includes a number of optional overlays to view precipitation and maximum and minimum temperatures.

London's Memorials on Google Maps

London Remembers

London Remembers has mapped over 2,000 memorials in London. Their website includes a Google Map showing the locations of plaques, monuments, statues and fountains throughout the capital.

Each mapped memorial includes a couple of photographs of the memorial. If you click the link in the marker you can view more details about who (or what) is being memorialised. If you don't want to browse London Remembers by location you can also search the database by name, category and date.

The History of Weather on Google Maps

WeatherSpark

On the day of my birth the sun emerged from the clouds and light shone upon the Earth. I know it was so because WeatherSpark told me.

WeatherSpark is a pretty amazing Google Map of current and historical weather conditions. The site lets you view the historical records of over 4,000 weather stations.

If you want to know what the weather was like in Honolulu on the day of Barack Obama's birth in August 1961 all you have to do is use the time-line to bring up the correct date and centre the map on Honolulu. You can then view the recorded weather for that day (a balmy 30 degrees centigrade).

If you are more interested in today's weather you can just centre the map on your location and view the current temperature and the current precipitation radar results.

Food Security and Aid on Google Maps

Food Security Aid Map

InterAction, with funding from the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), has used the Google Maps API to create this Food Security Aid Map. The map provides detailed project-level information on food security and agriculture work being done by non-government organizations.

The map highlights the work of NGO's trying "to help increase food supplies and to improve nutrition in vulnerable populations by increasing production, improving food distribution and market systems, and enhancing the ability of the poor to purchase and use food."

It is possible to search the map by sector, country and organisation. If you click on the returned map markers from a search it is possible to view the details of individual projects.
