The Singapore Election on Google Maps

Singapore will be holding parliamentary elections on 7th May.

One quirk of the Singapore electoral system is that constituency boundaries are changed for each election. This can be quite confusing for voters so Singapore Maps has created this Google Map to help voters discover which constituency they are in.

Users can enter an address or postcode to find out their constituency. The constituency boundaries are also clearly displayed on the map. If you click on the map you can also find out which candidates are standing in each constituency for both political parties.

Tagging Ghosts with Google Maps

Ghostag

When I saw the name of this Google Maps application I hoped that the creators had managed to attach GPS devices to a number of ghosts and were tracking their movements in real-time. No such luck. Ghostag is instead a crowd-sourced map of ghost sightings.

To tag a ghost on the map you simply need to click on a location and add the details of your sighting. If you manage to get a picture of the ghost (or failing that - the location of the sighting) you can also add that to the map.

The map uses the Google Maps API v3 Styled Maps function to create a suitably creepy look. When viewing the map turn on your speakers as it also contains some ghostly sounds and the occasional ghost like apparition appearing on top of the map.

Singapore & Stonehenge on Street View

Google have today released another big update of Street View imagery. For the first time Street View is available in Singapore. In the UK Google have added imagery from the winners of the UK Street View trike competition, including Stonehenge, Warwick Castle and Kew Gardens.

In Canada, Edmonton, Hamilton, London (Ontario), Saskatoon, St. John’s, Sudbury, Winnipeg and Victoria now all have Street View imagery.

There also seems to have been a huge increase of Street View in France, more cities added in Japan and some new imagery taken by the Street View trike, including Pompei, the Palace of Versailles, and Sea World San Diego and Orlando

Google Maps Integrated Travel Planning

Google Maps have teamed up with Singapore's Land Transport Authority to provide integrated travel directions for the country, complete with public transport and real-time traffic information.

Google Maps Singapore can give public transport directions with up to three options for routes. Users are then able to choose their preferred route and get step-by-step directions.

Driving directions use real-time traffic information from LTA to show the quickest routes. Users can then drag the suggested routes to avoid congestion (shown in red). Traffic conditions are updated every few minutes on the map and information from LTA is supplemented with crowdsourced information from mobile phone users. Users with Google Maps for Mobile can feedback on current traffic conditions and the data is then updated on the map.
