The Iraq Museum on Street View

Iraq’s National Museum in Baghdad is now on Street View.



Google LatLong has a nice post on how Google collected the imagery for this latest addition to Google Maps, which included inventing the 'Street View Trolley'.



As well as collecting Street Views of the interior of the museum Google also managed to capture close-up 360-degree views of individual artifacts, a selection of which can be seen on the Antiquities page of the Iraq Museum website.



A neat addition to the Street View controls on Google Maps allows allows the user to navigate between the 1st and 2nd floor of the museum. So Street View now goes upstairs as well as to Iraq!

Iraq IED Attacks on Google Maps

BOOMsys

The rather unfortunately named BOOMsys is a Google Map of improvised explosive device incidents in Iraq.

BOOMsys actually stands for Basic Ordnance Observational Management System and they have created a very impressive map displaying all the improvised explosive device incidents in Iraq in 2006. The map features an animation control that allows you to view the data over the full year.

As well as the animation controls BOOMsys includes a calendar navigation control that allows you to view the incidents for any month, week or individual day. The size of the polygons shown on the map reflects the number of incidents recorded at that location.

Wikileaks Iraq War Logs - Part Two

A Day in the Life of the War

WikiLeaks has released the largest classified military leak in history, around 400,000 secret field reports from Iraq. The Guardian's - Every Death in Iraq uses Google Fusion Tables to map every death in Iraq as found in the Wikileaks Iraq war logs.

The Guardian have also used Google Maps to visualise one day in the life of the war in Iraq. The day in question is 17th October 2006 in which 136 Iraqis were killed, 10 Americans died and hundreds of violent incidents occurred. The Guardian's visualisation maps the logs over the 24 hours minute by minute.

The visualisation uses a static Google Map with an interesting transparent overlay, the opacity of which is changed to reflect the time of day, making the map darker during night-time and lighter during the day.

Danish newspaper Ekstra Bladet has used Google Fusion tables with Google Maps to map the attacks on the allied forces by roadside bombs (Improvised Explosive Devices).

Ekstra Bladet has analysed the 400,000 WikiLeaks Iraq war logs which show that nearly half of the fallen soldiers from the international forces were killed in attacks by roadside bombs: 2,065 soldiers were killed and 16,949 were injured.

Ekstra Bladet have also created a Google Map that shows all of the 391,832 war log reports.

The map uses the Maptimize marker clustering solution to effectively display the 391,832 markers.

WikiLeaks War Logs
WikiLeaks have themselves included a Google Map on every one of the war logs to show the location of the incident reported. You can search the war logs at WikiLeaks by type, date and location.

The Iraqi Elections on Google Maps

Aljazeera Iraq Elections 2010 Map

Aljazeera are using Google Maps to geo-tag their coverage of the 2010 Iraq elections. Articles on the site concerning the election are linked to on the map with yellow map markers.

If you click on any of the markers an information window opens containing a link to the story on the Aljazeera website. The map provides a useful resource for anyone who wants to find Aljazeera stories pertaining to a particular location in Iraq.
