Friday Fun with Google Maps
Cleared for TakeoffAt Tinker Air Force Base in Oklahoma City the Google Maps satellite has managed to capture a time-lapse sequence of a plane taking off. In a happy coincidence the Google Maps satellite or plane flew over the airport just as a plane was taking off.
The outcome is that the Google Maps satellite view of the airport now has a sequence of seven shots of the same plane.
In the first image the plane has just managed to take off. As you scroll down in the satellite view on Google Maps the plane gains altitude and begins to bank a little to its left.
Google Maps FAIL
I find this very hard to believe - apparently Google Maps occasionally makes mistakes. Google Maps FAIL is dedicated to exposing the errors in Google Maps.
Unfortunately the blog hasn't been updated for a while and seems to have missed some of Google Map's recent errors.
One Google Maps mistake in particular has been dominating Google Maps news this week. Apparently the long driveway to the home of Laurie Gneiding and Michael Brady has been displayed on Google Maps as the entrance to Round Valley State Park in northern New Jersey.
This has resulted in a steady stream of cars mistakenly driving up the quarter-mile private driveway. The couple has now posted a sign at the entrance to the driveway that says "Google Maps is Wrong".
BushView from Google Maps Australia
Google Maps Australia is soon to introduce BushView, a tree-top version of Google Maps Street View. The imagery for BushView will be captured by cameras attached to tree kangaroos.
I would love this story to be true but as the video above was uploaded to YouTube on March 31st I suspect that this is just a little fun from Google Australia.

Let Me Google Maps That For You
If you are tired of people asking you where somewhere is then you can now send them a link to Let Me Google Maps That For You.
When you enter a location into LMGMTFY you get a short URL that you send to the person who asked where the location was. The link takes them to LMGMTFY where they will see their location typed into the search box with the message 'Was that so hard?" underneath. Then they will automatically be taken to the location on Google Maps.

In April 2000 The World Discoverer ran aground just off the coast of Nggela Sule Island, where she can still be seen on Google Maps.
God's Mouse
God's Mouse is a fun little Google Map that let's you pretend you are God with a giant mouse cursor. The mouse cursor on this map comes with a huge shadow, just like God's own mouse cursor.

Google Maps Tilt Shift
Street View Funny found this Google Maps 'bird's eye' view image that has a nice tilt shift effect.
The effect has been created accidentally because of the juxtaposition of some blurred map tiles next to some clearer tiles. However it is possible for Google to actually reproduce this effect on the fly on oblique view imagery by creating a blurring filter with the canvas element on individual map tiles.
Now that would be an interesting use of a Googler's 20% time (hint).

In Germany Google have given home owners the option to have their houses blurred out in Street View. A regional DIY store created a clever campaign around the idea of house blurring in Street View to promote their business.

Joemonster.org has discovered that if you zoom out on Google Maps you will find that the world is flat after all. My attempts to reproduce this on Google Maps have failed miserably. However the site did capture this screenshot so I'm sure it must be true.

Friday Fun with Google Maps
Homesense Bike Map
If you live in London and you want to know if there are any bikes currently available in your nearest Bike Hire station then the simplest solution is to grab your soldering iron, five LED lights, a framed printout of Google Maps, probably some Arduino boards and a connection to the internet.
If you throw all of those together in a pot and cook at gas mark 11 you too can create your own handy map with flashing lights showing the nearest bike stations with five or more bikes available.
The London Tube Map of Music
Mat Dolphin has created a map of music based on Harry Beck's famous tube map of London. You can even buy a limited edition print of the map.
If you live in London there is the additional fun of seeing which musician has been used to represent your local Underground station.

I know the burning question on your lips this week is 'How close to my house was Osama bin Laden hiding?'
Mibazaar has created a Google Maps tool that will tell you how far Osama bin Laden's hideout is to your location. To get the answer to this all important question you just need to allow the application to detect your location.

Kissing to Petting to F..king
Here are some travel directions that you might want to bookmark. In Germany Google Maps now provides directions to get from Kissing to Petting to F..king. The total journey time is 2 hours and 51 minutes, which is quite fast in my experience.
Street View Over the Rainbow
The Street View cars have captured millions of images around the world. Every few thousand shots or so it comes up with a picture of real beauty. Like this rainbow photgraphed over Dartmoor Forest in the UK.
Yandex Flash Mob
Google isn't the only online map to provide Street View type imagery. For example Russia's map service Yandex caught this weird Flash Mob in the Ukraine.
Two of Our Delivery Vans Are Missing
UK Supermarket giant Tesco track their delivery vans with GPS. Recently when they created a Google Map of their vans' positions they were surprised to find two of them in Poland.
It seems Tesco had sold the vans and forgotten to remove the installed tracking devices. Tesco have now contacted the van's new owners and the devices have been removed.

For the last couple of weeks a photograph has been being passed around the internet of a house in Wales that apparently resembles Hitler. Here is the Street View of the house on Google Maps.
If you aren't sure which house is meant to resemble the German dictator then this picture might make things more clear.

Friday Fun with Google Maps
Justin Bieber & Google Earth
I think I've found someone with a better knowledge of Google Earth than Frank Taylor and Mickey Mellen from the Google Earth Blog.
I'm not exactly sure what is going on in this video. I think the guy has to guess from a zoomed in image what the satellite image is of. To try and put him off a small boy called Justin Bieber has been brought in to grin inanely in his direction.
Whatever is going on, from the reactions, the guy seems to be able to name every part of the world from a very zoomed in shot of Google Earth.
Mapping London
Using the before and after visualisation technique, used by ABC Australia and the New York Times to show photographs of the impact of the Japan Tsunami, Mapping London has put together an app to compare the recently updated imagery on Google Maps in London with imagery from 2002-6.
The new imagery clearly shows the the development in east London for the 2012 London Olympics.
Grrrr!
Google Sightseeing have discovered a baby black bear on Street View. The bear is spotted crossing the Stewart-Cassiar Highway in British Columbia, Canada.

There was an Old Person of Cromer,
Who stood on one leg to read Homer;
When he found he grew stiff, he jumped over the cliff,
Which concluded that Person of Cromer.
The classic limericks of Edward Lear are full of appalling incidents (and even more appalling rhymes). Staircase3 has therefore decided that it is only fit to present his limerick's in the form of a crime map.
The limericks are marked on this Google Map by the given location of each main culprit.
Postcards from Google Earth: Bridges
Artist Clement Valla has created a series of postcards created from satellite images of bridges captured from Google Earth. The strange distortion of the bridges in the images does create some interesting and surreal views.

Looking Into The Past Pictures
Historypin may have mastered the art of placing historical pictures on top of Google Maps Street View. Buzz Feed however have devised a more low-tech method of comparing historical photographs with the modern day.
This one has nothing to do with maps but I love these 75 shots of old photos manually placed over the same view today.
Isokron
Isokron are creating some great public transportation visualisations with Open Street Map. The video above shows the travel times in the French city of Rennes. It shows the travel times from the town hall in Rennes (using the subway and the bus) and how they evolve during a typical Monday.

Google Maps Friday Fun
Google's satellite imagery update in London last week includes this amazing shot of an aircraft flying over Russell Square.

Aus Hadeln left a comment to say he had also found this image of a plane approaching Heathrow in west London.
Travelling east along the same flight path, approaching Heathrow, I found this plane.
Where is Christchurch? The Map Game
The tragic news from Christchurch this week has ensured that everyone knows the location of New Zealand's second largest city. Or do they?
The Map Game asks you to find locations on a Google Map. Well actually not on the map, as that would be too easy, but on Google Maps satellite view. So do you know where Christchurch is?

Photographer Michael Wolf is currently exhibiting at the Peurs sur la Ville exhibition at the Monnaie de Paris. His exhibition consists of a series of images collected from Google Street View.
Google API Periodic Table
I love this periodic table of all the Google API's. Not only does it look neat, it is pretty useful as well. Geo developers will be mostly interested in the blue API's, which are all geo related.

Google Sightseeing have been Street View hunting and managed to bag this impressive looking reindeer in Norway.

Alexander Chen has built a New York subway map in HTML5 and Javascript. That in itself is impressive but Alexander has improved on Vignelli's subway map by turning the subway lines into the strings of a musical instrument. The strings are played by the movement of the subway trains.
Atlantis Found on Street View
Weekly World News claim to have found the lost city of Atlantis on Google Maps. Whatever you think of Weekly World News' Photoshop skills their claim is at least more convincing than this attempt by the British newspaper The Sun to claim to have found Atlantis in Google Maps' bathymetry imagery.
MacGyver - How to use a Map
In this episode of MacGyver the eponymous hero shows us why Google Maps will never fully replace the good old traditional paper map.

Russia's Ruined Navy
After the collapse of the USSR, military budgets were slashed and much of the Russian navy was mothballed or scuttled. Rod Edwards has put together this haunting collection of Google Maps satellite images that capture the ruined remains of the Soviet navy.
Google Earth Bike
If you want to lose weight after the holidays you could do worse than plugging your bike into Google Earth. Instrucatables has details explaining how you can make your own Google Earth exercise cycling machine.

Friday Fun with Google Maps Mania
Noah's Ark on Street View
A couple of week's ago I found God with the help of Google Maps Street View. Not to be outdone Google Sightseeing have now found Noah's Ark.
10 Centuries in 5 Minutes
I love this animated map of Europe over 10 centuries. And, so that the Americans don't feel left out, here is a great video of an attempt to visualise Washington as it would have looked in 1814.
Make Your Own Scratch & Sniff Map
With a little help from artist Sissel Tolaas, 'the world's pre-eminent olfactory cartographer', The Atlantic report on how to make a scratch & sniff map. The only Google Map of smells I know of is Nioibu, a Japanese map that describes smells at different locations.
