Street View Trike Vote

A couple of weeks ago we reported that Google were asking for nominations for where the Street View trike should visit in the UK this summer. Google, with the help of VisitBritain, have sifted through the nominations and come up with a short-list.

Now it's time to vote! The short-list includes Stonehenge, Loch Ness, the Angel of the North and many more.

Humanitarian Google Map

Mercy Corps Map

Mercy Corps is a humanitarian organisation currently working in over 30 countries. In order to highlight the humanitarian work that the organisation is involved in around the world Mercy Corps have produced this Google Map.

Mercy Corps have placed red clickable polygons over each country where they are working. Clicking on any of the shaded polygons opens an information window with a brief description of the project in that country. Each information window contains a link to more details about the humanitarian work in the country.

Mannahatta Project Map

Have you ever wondered what New York was like before it was a city? This Google Maps mashup uses custom made map tiles as overlays to show Manhattan Island and its native wildlife, as it would have looked in 1609.

The overlay's transparency can be adjusted. It is therefore possible to find your favourite New York places on the map and see how they might have looked in 1609. There is also a search facility so that users can quickly find New York landmarks and addresses.

The Mannahatta Project website also has a number of downloadable lesson plans about the project. The lessons emphasize science and social studies, and are ideal for learning across disciplines.

Convert My Maps to the Google Maps API

Map Channels Feed Converter

Map Channels, the popular map creation website, has released a new utility to convert map data feeds from one format to another. The utility can convert tab-delimited text to KML or KML to tab-delimited text. The application is very useful if you want, for example, to extract data from a Google My Map that you have created.

The feed converter let's you convert the data from a My Map KML to tab-delimited text which you can then edit in a spreadsheet. To grab the KML from a My Map right click on the 'View in Google Earth' button in Google Maps and copy the URL. Next paste the URL address into your browser and change the part in the address that says 'output=nl' to 'output=kml'. Then save the KML to your computer.



Now you can just paste the KML code into the Map Channels Map Feed Converter and convert it into tab-delimited text and save the data to a spreadsheet. This means you can take the data from a My Map you have created and use the same data in a Google Maps mashup using the Google Maps API. Very cool!
