Google Maps Pink Elephants - Updated

Here is a little Easter egg (or maybe an April Fool) in Google Maps spotted by our friends over at Le Technoblog du LAC.

If you type Amphitheatre Pkwy, Mountain View into Google Maps you will find a pink elephant. Just be sure not to tell GoDaddy CEO Bob Parsons.

Update: Google LatLong has now posted about this pink elephant and 9 other 'real-world sightings' that you can now find in Google Maps. These real world sightings are giant animals that have been spotted around the world.

For example, a giant red lobster has been seen on a bridge in Boston.

In London you can find this strange marine creature.

In Germany a green dragon is on the loose in the Pfälzer Wald and in the Netherlands you might just catch sight of a whale.

That leaves 5 more. Can you find them?

Custom Street Views Brings You Shop View

118 218

French online directory 118 218 has started adding custom Street Views to its Google Maps of shops.

With custom Street Views it is possible to seamlessly add your own panoramic images to Street View with links from Google's own Street View imagery. 118 218 has started adding panoramic 360 degree imagery from inside shops.

Where the custom Street Views are available a small red door icon is added to the Google Street View of the exterior of the shop. Clicking on the icon will take you to the interior panorama.

Currently you can view custom Street Views for the florist Daniel Guittat, the restaurant La maison Géorgienne and the institut de beaute Shyms Nail.

What Mobile - Google & Nokia to Merge

What Mobile reports this morning that Nokia will soon merge with Google. The combined company will now be known as ‘Nookle‘. Google Maps will also be renamed, becoming Nookle Maps.

"... one long-time Nokia fan told What Mobile that the name 'Nookle Maps' was a far better name than 'Ovi Maps', which according to him: 'sounded like some sort of made up joke name'."

OpenGeoData - OpenStreetMap to Disband
According to OpenGeoData the huge success of Google Map Maker has seen OpenStreetMap volunteers abandon OSM in droves. OpenStreetMap has therefore decided to face up to the inevitable and close.

OpenGeoData claim that "Steve Coast, founder of OSM, is to change roles at Microsoft and begin working on printer drivers for the upcoming Windows 8."

However I have exclusive news that OSM has actually rebranded as OpenWhateverMap, with a revolutionary new design.

TechCrunch - Google Places Removed from Google Search

TechCrunch has noticed that Google Places has been removed from Google search results after being classified as spam and a content farm.

TechCrunch says that the Google spam team specifically target "sites that copy others’ content and sites with low levels of original content." They have no choice then but to remove Google Places form Google search results.

Google Maps Removes Buckingham Palace

Buckingham Palace Blurred Out

Google has responded to a request from the Queen of England and removed Buckingham Palace from Google Maps. With a planned royal wedding at the end of this month the royal family has been concerned about guests turning up uninvited.

Therefore, to make things more difficult for gatecrashers, Google has agreed to blur Buckingham Palace in the satellite view on Google Maps.

Google has also captured Paris' latest sinkhole in this new release of satellite imagery. Since the Eiffel Tower collapsed into the catacombs last month the old imagery did look a bit dated.
